Chef's Notes:

Press and starch all fabrics prior to cutting. Use a scant 1/4" seam.

INGREDIENTS

6-INCH BLOCK

From fabric 1, cut:
{A} (12) 1.5” squares
{B} (4) 1.5” x 2.5” rectangles

From fabric 2, cut:
{A} (4) 1.5” squares
{C} (2) 2” squares

From fabric 3, cut:
{C} (2) 2” squares

From fabric 4, cut:
{A} (8) 1.5” squares

From fabric 5, cut:
{B} (8) 1.5” x 2.5” rectangles

12-INCH BLOCK

From fabric 1, cut:
{A} (12) 2.5” squares
{B} (4) 2.5” x 4.5” rectangles

From fabric 2, cut:
{A} (4) 2.5” squares
{C} (2) 3” squares

From fabric 3, cut:
{C} (2) 3” squares

From fabric 4, cut:
{A} (8) 2.5” squares

From fabric 5, cut:
{B} (4) 2.5” x 4.5” rectangles

INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1. MAKE CORNER UNITS

Sew four 1.5”  [2.5”] Fabric 4 squares and four 1.5”  [2.5”] Fabric 1 squares. Sew each pair to a 1.5” x 2.5” [2.5” x 4.5”] Fabric 1 rectangle.

STEP 2. MAKE HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES

Cut the two 2” [3”] Fabric 2 squares and two 2” [3”]Fabric 3 squares diagonally and sew into four half-square triangles (HSTs). Trim each HST to 1.5” [2.5”].

Sew the HSTs into a pinwheel. Be sure the Fabric 2 and Fabric 3 triangles are in the position shown.

STEP 3. MAKE FLYING GEESE

Use the 1.5” x 2.5” [2.5” x 4.5”] Fabric 5 rectangles and the remaining 1.5” [2.5”] squares to make eight flying geese, with the stitch-and-flip technique. Four geese will have a Fabric 4 triangle on the right and a Fabric 1 triangle on the left.

The other four flying geese have an Fabric 1 triangle on the right and Fabric 2 triangle on the left.

Sew the flying geese into four squares.

STEP 4. MAKE FLYING GEESE

Lay out the units as shown, with the pinwheel unit in the center, surrounded by the star point units and corner units. Sew the units into rows, then sew the rows together to complete your Center Ice block.
